The ability to read English theological literature is a competency for theology students, as most academic resources, journals, and theological references are published in English. However, many students encounter difficulties in understanding theological vocabulary, academic terminology, and complex English texts. This study aims to examine the role of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in improving theology students’ ability to read English theological literature. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving students of the Lutheran Theological College who had completed an ESP-based English course. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that ESP plays a significant role in enhancing students’ reading abilities, with an overall mean score of 4.53, categorized as very high. ESP assists students in understanding theological vocabulary, developing effective reading strategies, improving comprehension of academic literature, and fostering independent learning in accessing international theological resources. Although several challenges remain, including differences in students’ English proficiency levels and the limited availability of specialized instructional materials, ESP has proven to be a relevant and effective approach to supporting English language learning in theological education. Therefore, the systematic development of ESP-based instruction is necessary to improve students’ access to English theological literature and strengthen their academic competencies.
